Reasons for Brakes to Wear Down
It is normal for brakes to wear down with long term use, but sometimes they wear down abnormally quickly. The most common causes are:
- Corroded Slide Pins: The caliper must be able to slide smoothly but this may not happen if the slide pins are corroded, resulting in the caliper sitting slightly off center.
- Torn Piston Seal: Pistons are operated by brake fluid, but if the seal is broken the fluid will leak. As a result, the piston will not be able to return completely to its starting position, significantly accelerating wear.
